Post-Holiday Blues, Purposeful Work & The Power of Doing ‘Nothing’

black and white portrait of a woman's face

I’ve been telling myself a big fat lie. Since returning from Spain I’ve been spinning the story that my life is boring and “I’m not doing much.” But what I mean is: “I’m not solo-mooching around a city in the sun” There’s a big difference.

And so if you’re anything like me, and can easily get caught in the post holiday blues – here’s your reminder that actually, it’s not all that bad. It just tastes different, that’s all 🌝

Doing nothing actually looked like:

ONE

I painted another nude. My new favourite past time.
I’m organising a painting workshop with Oliva Bossert – watch this space for that. I have ordered an easel from Santa.

TWO

I recorded a faux-podcast episode with my friend Edila, all about how ‘routines’ and morning practice can become another crutch or a control system if you’re not careful.

Listen to find out what our version of non-performative spirituality looks like, and why adaptive rituals are better than time based ones. 👀

👉🏼 Listen to the episode with Edila and I here.

I’m not exaggerating when I say this was a highlight of my week and I cannot wait to bring my real podcast online. I can’t wait for the internet to hear my full freaky deaky self in stereo.

THREE

Thursday I spent the entire day, before the workshop I hosted at a day retreat, in meditation and yoga nidra. This was a super nourishing and resourcing day, to give myself the medicine that I so often encourage others to take.

The thought of ‘taking the day off’ on launch day, in the past, would’ve been out of the question. This in itself is worth celebrating. Tell me, is taking a random Thursday off, un planned, something that feels safe or scary for you at the minute? It’s the entire reason I own a business.

(More chat about ‘freedom’ in the podcast ep, btw!)

Not many people know that I’m a spiritual girly. I’m not performative with it, that’s why. I don’t play dress up in it to sell you stuff, it’s just who I am.

More on that another time… but we also touch on it in the episode here.

    FOUR

After the day retreat, my energy cup was refilled ready to host the Passion, Profit and Play workshop. We covered the intersection of:

    • creating from lived experience
    • designing for human truth
    • shaping culture
    • using intuition as FELT data
    • following the thread of desire within you and your people

This was positioned for aspiring packaging or product based creators, but in actual fact it’s suited to any and all businesses that are in the business of creating lived experiences

so i’m going to massage it and produce it again for every one.

    FIVE

Finally, on Friday night, I went to a gig. I saw Kneecap. I stood at the back like a geriatric.

My faith in humanity was restored. Not only did they take frequent rest breaks mid set (!) they spoke about Gaza, they asked the crowd to chant because in doing so, it would send positive energy to the people there, AND, they even stopped the set on a few occasions to make sure people in the mosh pit were looked after. I love a kind compassionate controversial activist.

    The Inspiration

Kneecap speak here about how their music is created as art, poetry and storytelling. the themes here tie back to my workshop immensely; where we spoke about creating for purpose and share a message, not just to be played on ipods/look cute.

their music isn’t for everyone, but they give a shit about humanity, so it becomes for everyone. Watch the interview here.

    The Activity

    What do you care about?

I’m dropping a few journal prompts here for you, from my workshop and inspired by gentle activism.

Write your answers and see what comes up?

“Whether you identify as a designer or a founder, your work is a vehicle for change. Once you anchor in that and find the conviction to lead with that; every product / project becomes more meaningful and more commercially powerful.”

    1. What change do I want my work to make in the lives of people or in culture?
    2. What do you care about that you wish more people cared about?
    3. What shift do you care most about creating for your clients?
