Geo politics, or just, plain politics is not something I speak much about because it’s not a pillar of my communication.
What I mean by that is; it’s not something that drives my connection to you as humans or calls my people in.
We connect in other ways.
Does that mean I don’t have political views? no, of course not.
I do.
Business is political. In the same way that it’s spiritual. It can’t be separated because it IS.
This isn’t about declaring moral superiority. It’s about being transparent about the values that guide my work.
On Saturday I returned from a trip to Dubai where I met with a client to research time and place as research for our new collaboration.
(I call this Fieldwork.)
Meanwhile…
On instagram, you may have seen: I was updating you here every day on allll of the things that I was getting up to.
✈️ I had a great time! I lived my best boujie life!
I loved my trip and felt really inspired, motivated and expanded by the experience. (I’m beyond grateful that this is my job; I’ll share more here soon.)
AND/BUT.
As I was sharing, I was acutely aware of the dark side of Dubai – I won’t get into it all here but I’m sharing a few notes on my stories. It’s possible to have a deep appreciation for a place you’re experiencing, and then to also take note of the impact the place also has, in the same breath.
I would even say, as entrepreneurs it’s our responsibility to be able to hold both and not look the other way. Holding both isn’t comfortable – but opting out of the conversation entirely would be easier, and I’m not interested in easy.
As someone running a business that is, by definition, global – it’s my responsibility to be aware of what’s going on in the world – to live eyes open. And to take considered and aware choices as part of the work that I do. Especially as most of my agency clients are creating products with ingredients sourced from various locations in the world.
Geography and the politics of it, cannot be avoided.
Although as the provider and collaborator, we aren’t responsible for every decision; we are responsible for our own awareness, education and choices. We can’t fix the world alone.
But we can take part in its betterment.
That means:
I only work with humans who share the same values as me. Together we aim to better the lives of every day people, no matter the location. If we can bring a health, wellness and sustainable consciousness to more people, then even better.
I won’t tolerate collaborations or projects based solely on the premise of profit or a quick win. They have to meet the above criteria and the product needs to be considered, curated and intentional.
And I 100% won’t tolerate projects rooted in evil or any other belief systems rooted in exclusion, exploitation, or profit-at-any-cost thinking. I don’t want this to sound overwhelming or scary, it’s not meant to be. There’s enough of that out there.
All I ask is that you create your own inner compass and with every collaboration or every experience you take part in. Bring more awareness and consciousness to the world you’re in. Find out where the ingredients are being sourced. Research the countries that tell the story and look into what it means.
If you’re hiring a mentor or taking part in a group: sense check if their values are aligned and felt.
I don’t plan to fix the world – but I always wanted to make it a better place. That’s why I started by business in the first place. And so yes, it is political, and that’s why now, more than ever:
It’s important to keep showing up and keep sharing and to keep earning.
- More money in the hands of people who give a shit is needed.
- The more options you have, the more discerning and selective you can be.
- The safer you’ll feel to say no to the collaboration that pays the bills but doesn’t meet your values.
These beliefs lose me opportunities. I’m okay with that. I’m sharing them so you can decide if this is the kind of world you want to be part of. Now isn’t the time to pause selling – it’s time to double down on owning your gifts and beliefs because the compounded effect of helping yourself helps everyone.
The world needs more innovators and change-makers right now, so please, keep going.
If you want to chat or need help navigating the ‘politics’ of business or are feeling overwhelmed about what it means – please don’t hesitate to DM me. I know it can sound big and right now it can feel difficult to carry on but I promise you’ve got it and I PROMISE the world needs you.
